Focusing on Yancey’s incisive and humane scholarship across a prestigious career but especially the collaborative work of the 1990s, this nonlinear webtext proposes a Yancey-inspired reconsideration of Bitzer’s (1968) concept of rhetorical situation. Guided by termites and Haraway’s (2016) oddkin—who connects through sympoiesis or making-with—this series of interconnected fragments draws on Yancey’s four-plus decades of publications to outline three key elements of a Yancey-shaped rhetorical situation: agentive co-constitution, which expands the boundaries of subjectivities considered rhetorically “fitting”; porous materialities, which amplifies, through textur-ality, the range and composition of texts recognized as rhetoric; and, finally, rhetorical accountability, which brings ethics—its respectful caring, calculated consequences, and vigilance—into the rhetorical situation at its beginning, its middle, and beyond its ending. Rather than a rejection, Yancey’s theorizing—both direct and lateral—serves as the foundation for this transformative augmentation of Bitzer’s rhetorical situation. Her work offers a sympoietic vision of rhetorical situation rich in promise and hope, both so important in the current troubled moment. (171)
