Navigating Differences

Collaboration is the key to research in its myriad forms and can transcend disciplinary boundaries and foster intellectual growth. Looking at Kathi's reflections on collaborative work in the realm of scholarly endeavors, one can easily discern her profound insights into navigating differences—cultural, institutional, or linguistic. She sheds light on the motivations, challenges, and outcomes of collaborative scholarship, presenting a rich tapestry of experiences that underscore the value of embracing diversity in collaborative endeavors.

 She captures the essence of collaboration as a multifaceted process—a process that highlights the significance of diverse perspectives in shaping collective knowledge. While attributing their genesis to various catalysts ranging from occasional interactions during her "perky moments" to intentional research pursuits, Kathi is often the impetus behind collaborative projects. The dynamic nature of her collaborative efforts emanates from sporadic initiatives to comprehensive research undertakings involving multiple contributors (This team being one of the many). Kathi has the innate ability to foresee the intrinsic challenges inherent in collaboration and does well by acknowledging the complexities arising from differing viewpoints, priorities, and methodologies among collaborators.

Looking at our research team’s collaborative project, cultural, institutional, and linguistic disparities emerged as pivotal aspects influencing the collaborative landscape. We fostered an inclusive decision-making process that considered input from all team members; via team meetings, shared Google docs, and emails. Our team was always mindful of the cultural nuances (especially our beliefs, and behaviours towards writing and collaboration) which helped in promoting a respectful and open-minded approach to diverse viewpoints. Eventually, it ended up creating a brave and sensitive space where Kathi and the team would be treating every member of the team on par with each other, for example, deciding about the order in which the author’s name would be put in a publication. Regular check-ins and updates would keep this collaborative, and caring, spirit going. Project workflows and decision-making due to the multi-institutional, inter-continental nature of the collaboration went on smoothly because of very clear protocols for ensuring equitable participation. Throughout the entire four-year (and more) duration of navigating differences, our collaboration primarily followed a consensus-driven approach to foster inclusive decision-making, ensuring that every team member had a voice in the collaborative process.

Kathi was instrumental in leveraging this diversity as a strength and that led to the overall enhancement of the range of collaborative projects that she participated in. She dwelt on the intricacies of navigating these differences, drawing parallels between collaborative dynamics and negotiations in everyday life. Diverse values, preferences, and perspectives mirror the complexities confronted by many in collaborative contexts, and there is always a need to underpin the necessity of negotiation and compromise in fostering cohesive collaboration. Kathi explicitly talks about being the ‘odd ball’ in terms of being the only American in the most recent collaboration that she is in and how seamlessly she feels like gelling well within the team despite differences at multiple levels. Kathi does this best, believes in it, and practices it authentically. 

There is always scope for inherent tensions within collaborative scholarship. The collaborative process can suffer at the hands of very petty concerns such as disparities in word count to divergent perceptions of intellectual property (C for Collaboration 13:09-13:28). Kathi believes in the need for transparent protocols and clear delineation of roles and responsibilities in collaborative endeavors to mitigate conflicts and ensure equitable contributions from all stakeholders. However, she also provides that personal, emotional, and intellectual touch to the collaborators who, she feels, might require a tad nudge.

We can see the transformative power of collaborative scholarship in shaping Kathi’s scholarly approach. Drawing upon scholarly literature, Kathi refers to seminal works that delve into the intricacies of collaboration, authorship, and team dynamics. She reflects on how scholarly insights on collaboration, such as Rebecca Burnett's study on the productivity of disagreements in teams, have informed her approach to collaborative endeavors, emphasizing the significance of substantive disagreements in fostering intellectual growth. 

Glimpses into collaborative practices extending beyond academic realms illustrate how collaborative efforts permeate various facets of life – planning travel itineraries and compiling photo books encapsulates the essence of collective engagement in fostering shared experiences and embracing diverse perspectives. The nuances of navigating differences and leveraging diversity to enrich scholarly pursuits can be seen in how Kathi transcends boundaries, fosters inclusive dialogues, and catalyzes collective learning through synthesising diverse perspectives.
